Tui-Na (TCM Therapeutic Massage)

If you are afraid of needles, Therapeutic Massage / Tui-Na (pronounced TWEE NAR) may be an option to help restore your well-being.

What is Tui-Na

Like Acupuncture and Herbs, Tui-Na has been a modality of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) for a few thousand years. As an integral part of TCM, Tui-Na is a 2000-year old system of hand manipulations to either strengthen, subdue, or restore normal Qi flow. It aims at curing diseases by restoring the balance of Yin and Yang,

Theorized and systematized as one of the treatment methods in two of the oldest medical books, “Enpror’s Classics” and “Ten Chapters of Empror Chi-Bo’s Massage” more than two thousand years ago, Tui-Na, as an integral part of the oldest complete medical system, was described in detail to treat pain related disorders, atrophy, paralysis, digestive system disorders, and more.  Latter on, offshoots of Tui-Na and techniques were developed for orthopedic, pediatric, obstetric, and preventive medicine.

What Is The Difference Between Regular Massage and Tui-Na?

Regular massage, in general, is to help relax the muscle and relieve the stress. Tui-Na’s goal is to cure diseases, both acute and chronic, by relieving symptoms and attacking the root of problems.
Since 220 AC till modern days, Tui-Na practitioners in both Taiwan and China have been treating not just sports injury, joint and muscle related disorders (including dislocated joints), and minor broken bones, but also internal chronic disorders.

What Is The Difference Between Acupressure and Tui-Na?

Acupressure (applying pressure on Acupuncture points) is just one of the techniques used in Tui-Na. Other techniques include brush, grab, knead, roll, rub (both with and without friction), push, and pull. A blend of theses techniques are normally applied in sequence to effectively either open a blocked channel or treat disorders in combination with other TCM modalities.

While everyone can press and apply pressure on different parts of the body on so called “pressure points”, it should not be called Acupressure. To apply Acupressure and other Tui-Na techniques effectively, it will take a practitioner minimum three to four years of study of both TCM and Acupuncture foundations, principles, diagnosis, and treatments. There are fourteen main Acupuncture meridians, fifteen collaterals, and at least 400 acupuncture points. To memorize them, to correctly identify them, to understand how they interact with each other, how they cause diseases, and how to employ those acupuncture points to treat disorders, require some serious training and hands-on experience.
